Senior Night a rousing success for Hilltoppers

It was a night to celebrate for the seniors on Science Hill’s baseball team, and celebrate they did.

Everybody in the lineup had at least one hit and the Hilltoppers used a nine-run third inning to post a 15-0 Senior Night non-conference victory over Cocke County on Friday night at TVA Credit Union Ballpark.

David Bryant drove in four runs for the Hilltoppers. He went 3 for 4 with a three-run homer in the second inning that made it 6-0.

“That was a blast,” Bryant said. “I’m just out having fun with my teammates, winning baseball games and it’s fun all around. I think we’re coming together and starting to hit.”

Ben Grable was 3 for 4, scored three times and stole two bases. Four pitchers — Josh Fransisco, Quinn Boyle, Jackson Hill and Chance Hall — combined on the five-inning shutout.

“They played to the script right there,” Science Hill coach Ryan Edwards said. “We came out and scored runs early. The pitchers threw strikes. We made our routine plays and we hit the baseball well.”

Science Hill, which honored 13 seniors before the game, improved to 26-6.

Science Hill sent 14 batters to the plate in the nine-run third inning. Carson Lodge had two hits in the inning. Zach Copenhaver did even more, driving in a pair with a triple and a double in the same frame.

Matthew Hembree, Science Hill’s team manager, got into the game in the third inning as a pinch runner and eventually scored on Garrett Stiltner’s two-run single.

“That was awesome,” Edwards said. “Matthew, he and I go way back. We go to church together. He has been just a joy to have as my manager. The kids love him and for him to get that moment was awesome. I know he was thrilled to get that opportunity.”

Science Hill travels to Asheville, North Carolina, on Saturday to take on T.C. Roberson, the reigning North Carolina Class 4A state champions.
